Reference line, flat and square
My initial cut was measured from the original factory bottom. This is a critical step, measure,mark and cut very carefully. A nice flat cut doesn't necessarily mean that plane is square to the sides. Check that with a piece of flat stock and a square.
My aim is less than 1/8" out of square in 2 feet.
Sit down and weld!
