I'm struck by how this gasifier project has become a metaphor in my life. This single project has been a mechanism not only to measure my own salt, but an incredible mechanism, almost a litmus test, for those around me. I have learned this: There are basically two types of individuals I've interacted with as part of all of this - the ones that ask "really? why?" and the ones that ask "really, why not?". Those that seem to have every reason not to do something, and those who find the reasons to do something. I'm sure this is what all individuals that push the envelope, that ask questions, that seek to improve their understanding face. I've also had my share of self-professed environmentalists angered by the notion of my building of a gasifier - vehemently opposed to any form of combustion and carbon-neutral biomass gasification. Even going so far as to ask if it is legal in my town. It seems that biomass gasification has to overcome some gross misconceptions and misinformation. In any event, it is our right to seek energy independence - in our own garages, basements and backyards - on our own time and dime. The promise of small-scale biomass gasification may be fraught with challenges, but really, why not??
