Gasification Gets TV Series Exposure

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet... I'm interested in this new show called "The Colony" on Tuesdays at 9:00 PM EST @ Discovery. The show premise is simple. If the world breaks down and society is destroyed - how would a group of people survive?

When the show began, they "found" a warehouse and moved in where they had a bunch of stuff including batteries and an inverter that they wired up. No surprise that they needed to recharge their battery bank. They had a couple of small engines and an alternator and I kept thinking "build a gasifier, build a gasifier!" (not really expecting them to) - and was thrilled when one of the engineers in the group actually knew someone who used one and prototyped and built a crude model. Now I say "you're going to tar up your engine, you're going to tar up your engine!" - but it's awesome that they had enough knowledge to do it. Check it out! (The handyman naysayer floors me)

Just watched the whole season. Of course they never showed the "proper" gasifier that they used to power the big truck :( . Boy, they sure were lucky to find a crate of Harbor Freight tools, a battery bank, inverters, solar panels, an EV motor, a generator, ... ;)

I don't see the clip posted on Discovery where they changed their approach. They ended up using a smaller metal gas can filled with wood pallet chips and putting that directly into the burning barrel to heat it up very hot. It was enough to distill the wood and get woodgas, but as they were flaring it off, it's obvious that the gas is dirty just by the color of the flame. They piped it completely unfiltered to the engine. The engine ran on it but it probably not for long.

Very interesting show! I hope they update that gasifier, as it is by my opinion not even worth showing. Not to mention the run times and problems with refueling. That computer geek could surely remember more details if he saw it in action.
