I don't think it is that critical, I've seen many different hearth designs. The distance to the grate depends on the size of fuel that you are using. With pellets or small chips you should keep it to about a 1/4", but, with the size of yours, you should keep it 1/2". With the dims. that you are using, your unit should breath some serious fire. Is this one going to have the mega hopper on it?

When I started my build, I knew that I wanted to be able to run more than one thing at a time. I figured 2 - 18hp motors at least and I wanted to be able to run a vehicle at some point also. Go to the main page, left hand side, at the bottom you will see "Imbert Dimensions" under "Resources". I found that line E was closest to the horsepower rating I was looking for. Ben set this table up very well, all of the air flow dimensions that you will need are right there to build the perfect hearth. Hope this helped.
