Larry,
Saw your design idea for your gasifier, and read the discussion here from some time ago. We have been down the research road of making pellets from a wide range of different biomass feedstocks. We have spent 3 winters now burning them in a traditional biomass pellet stove (forced air) most of these pellets being from corn stover, have lots of that here in Wisconsin. I think there is a lot more that could be done to better extract the btu's than the way I am doing it. I have looked at gasifiction heavy, have talked with Ben and others on sight about it but still remain a little hesitant as to what to do. I have built a small gasifier with an adjoining flame box. Much simpler than what you have built. It works well and producing gas is not a problem. Slagging and high ash/mineral content is. Not to many have firm advice to give on this because most are using wood chunks, or wood pellets with very low ash. Moisture is not a problem as the pellets are already 6 to 8%.
Your rotating conical grate design looks like a possible mechanical device to handle ash. Just like the pellet burner I use has an agitator to break up the silica clusters as they begin to fuse together at 1200 or so degrees. I would also like to go to a CHP system instead of just doing heat so gasification seems the way. I have some friends working on a pellet burner to do steam with the Green steam engine but have a ways to go on that if it works. Stirling doesn't seem to have enough horsepower to get alot of electric. Any help you could offer I would appreciate. Try to keep it simple if you can. I am a hands on, learn visually, and by doing type of guy. We own our own millwright/welding buisness and now pellets are a part to, and my wife and I really feel we need to look at the aspects of how we can be self sufficient, food, energy, ecomomical, etc. Thanks in advance for your time.
